Yes, cervidil gel is a very safe way to soften the cervix and prepare it for labor. Generally our moms come in the night before, have the cervidil placed, rest that night and pitocin is started in the morning. You may not make it till next Tuesday anyway, many woman are scheduled for induction and come in beforehand in labor. Good luck!

Cervidil just softens the cervix, it doesn't start contractions. The pitocin starts the contractions. As the poster states below, It's true that if the cervix is high and closed at term and labor is induced artificially there may be a high chance of c-section because the body just isn't ready. However, the body may not be ready anyway and the baby needs to be out by 42 weeks, doctors don't like pregnancies to go on any longer than that for a few reasons, the main one being the placenta gets "old" and is not as efficient as transferring nutrients. Also, the baby gains weight rapidly the last few weeks, sometimes a pound a week and the head/shoulders get too large, especially if it's your first baby.

I think it just helps you KEEP progressing. Pitocin makes contractions come hard and fast, and all that pressure on your cervix if you aren't already effaced can make it swell and actually set you back, dilation-wise.

It's hardly a representative statistical sampling, but I don't know anyone who was induced without the gel first who avoided a C-section...
