Do you think child support should be monitored ?

I saw something on tv today where this guy refused to pay his exwife the support out of fear she would use it to buy things for the new baby she is carrying which is not his. I was surprised when dr phil( I rarely watch ) told him it was none of his business what she spent that money on.

I think if someone has to pay child support, the person receiveing it needs to be able to prove they are spending it on their kids, receipts on what not. I mean child support is not supposed to be paying the mortgage or cell phone bills of the other adult mom or dad.

DO you think child support when given should be able to be monitored and if it's not used in the best intrest of the child it should be cut off unless the person paying buys what the child needs?

YES OR NO ONLY PLEASE, I don't care to hear stories

I am not a single mother and I say no. Lets take in consideration all the moneys that is being pulled from somewhere else to help make up the gap where the other person is not paying child support. Child Support is to make up the fact that two parents aren't working together to make sure all the needs for that child are met. The child is in need of a home, so why not have the money help pay the mortgage. That is a sorry excuse for not paying child support. If that's the case where is the back child support money he should have just saved it all.

Well, before they can monitor how the money is being spent they need to learn how to monitor whether or not the parent with custody is even getting the child support they should be. My father never paid his ordered child support. My mom would go without child support for years at a time. In total, he failed to pay 27,000-something dollars in child support. Now, my brother and I are 20 and 18, so my mom can't recieve child support anymore, and she'll never get that money. She struggled horribly. Really, it shouldn't matter what the other person THINKS the money is getting spent on. If the other parent is paying all the child support, but for some reason the children are boney and are wearing ratty, old clothing, then, yes, there's reason to believe the money is going towards something other than what it should. And in that case there's reason for monitoring.

Yes, this is something I often ponder. When a person is told that he/she must pay child support, he is paying to support the child that is in custody of the other parent. Therefor the money that is given in to child support should be spent on the child itself and his needs, not a gold necklace, not a new car, not a plasma HDTV. I think it is a good idea to have it monitored to where the receiver must provide proof that he/she is using the child support for the child and not his/her selfish needs.

Now Jennifer F said something interesting, that one cannot monitor what the money is being spent on because you cannot put a dot on the money and track it. Well simple solution, a bank account with a credit/debit card that will only be used to purchase and not take money out but it will have access to writing checks. That way one can see where the card was used, for what and how much. One bank account where the Child support money goes into and it's tracked by the bank account monthly summary. That way if it was used to pay for a Gold Necklace for the parent, then there is proof that the money is not being handled correctly towards the needs of the child.

Okay, here it goes!
I was a single mom for a long time. I keep receipts and doctor bills. I spend my child support on my child. I think to some degree it should be monitored! I know of to many people who abuse the support! However, child support is supposed to go toward anything a child needs! They need a home, heat, electric, and a phone. I worked up to 3 jobs to give my daughter what she needed because her loser father didn't pay for 3 years! It was hard and unfair to me and my daughter. Even though I receive it now I don't go out blow it on stupid stuff. There are times I use it to help pay bills though! He didn't seem to mind me working my @ss off or me using my money to make ends meet. So I see nothing wrong with spending his money on whatever the hell I want to! It should be monitored on both ends!

Yes, people should need to prove what child support is spent on...!!!
And cut-off if not spent wisely. People work long hours and difficult jobs, not knowing where any of the money is going....
drugs, food, clothes, the new boyfriend... who knows?
The person paying support isn't always at fault for a divorce....!
I personally know of a case in which the father of two beautiful girls and a boy (not his) is not allowed to see any of the children, despite the fact that he pays child support every f****g month, simply because the ex doesn't feel like allowing him.
It's One of the worst things to do to a parent....not to mention the children...they are then ones who are screwed over in all this....
This is just one of those topics that makes my blood boil....

I don't quite get it.

You send me a child support check, which I deposit in my bank account.

It makes no sense to say which of the dollars in my account are going for which things: clothes for myself, food for the kid, whatever.

The only way to make such a case would be that the child is being neglected.

If I buy a pound of ground beef and cook a meal for the whole family, was I supposed to pay for 1/3 of that meat from a different compartment in my purse?

It makes sense to me that child support goes toward that child's shelter and heat and so on. How could you split up the heating bill, so the father is paying only their child's heat?

If you pay child support, and that means the mother now has enough money to buy herself slippers, there's nothing wrong with that (unless, as I say, she's neglecting the child).

Since you're paying for the child, she now has enough money to buy things she needs, rather than spending all of her money on the child.

(I know this isn't about YOU, I just used the word 'you' for 'the father')

See what I'm getting at?

NO. And I'm a non-custodial parent. This is just a way for abusers to maintain control. If the issue is neglect or abuse of the children (the cs is going towards recreational drugs rather than food on the table), then you've got a bigger problem than budgeting and should be pursued separately. And paying the mortage IS part of the expense of raising children.

Ok that was stupid....

IN THIS SOCIETY (PLANET) IT TAKES MONEY TO UPBRING A CHILD....EVER HEARD HOW MUCH IT COSTS FOR DAYCARE, MEDICAL ISURANCE, PROVIDING SHELTER AND FOOD FOR A KID? WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM?????

I PAY CHILD SUPPORT!!!! AND I DON'T QUESTION IT BECAUSE JUST ALONE HEALTH INSURANCE FOR MY DAUGHTER IS ABOUT $500.00 A MONTH...AND HER SCHOOL IS $6,000 A YEAR

But then if you are the type that just think living off MY TAXPAYING MONEY IS OK....then you're right....since my government provides health insurance, food, shelter, and clothing to illegal immigrants (that don't pay any taxes) then it should be monitored. But come on get a clue!!! Raising kids in the US most of the time is expensive.
