You can do it !! By jumping more you strenghten the muscles in your legs and around your knees which helps to support and protect your knees, and they won't be as weak and won't get busted out in a few more years.

You are wise to take into consideration the long term ramifications if you were to "increase the air in your knees" through extraordinary means.
I believe that one has to be naturally gifted (or tall) to be able to dunk a basketball ball. Much like your other respondents, I am 5'10'' 1/2 and was at a time able to do a two-handed tap board. However, since I don't play as often anymore (which may happen in your case should you stop playing basketball regularly), it has become difficult to even execute a one-handed tap board.
My suggestion to you is, be happy with what you have and try to work on other fundamental skills like passing, dribbling, and shooting.
Hope this helps.

jump rope already given. Practice layups and try and get a three quarters jump on them. Do that like everyday and you will be able to get a little higher. You need to practice jumping but not going for a max. Then when you play basketball try also to drive and go for layups this helps build up your one foot jump for me Its almost impossible to go off two feet or use two hands I guess I am not designed for that I only jump good with one hand even if I use both legs. I dont know why that makes a differenence because with one hand if your hand is small and cant palm the ball this could cause a future problem two hands would solve....
hope that helps practice layups is my answer build muscle that way

Spud Webb was 5"6 and won the slam dunk contest. Mugsy Bogues was only 5"3 (the shortest player ever to play in the NBA) and he slam dunked all the time. Therefore, if slam dunking is something you really want.. you'll do it. Just keep practicing. Don't worry about your knees, the more you do it, the stronger they get.

How about becoming a great ball handler first? The world doesn't need anymore big lummoxes who can stand two inches from the basket and push the ball through. They need guys who can move the ball upcourt quickly, set up the play, find the open man. Any Frankenstein can stand there and just wait for somebody to throw the ball up toward the basket so he can tap it in.

you should jump > 4'5, that's a lot even for a professional bballer. work on your game first, after you can shoot 3's without stopping, then you can worry about your vertical leap. You're 17, until 20 years you can grow a few inches. The best jumping workout? well... working your muscles at the gym and jump rope. good luck!!

It is possible. Watch your technique, but like the guy said, start on a smaller goal and progress. I think it is fun to jump so keep at it!

Work on your calf muscles. It's not impossible, regardless of what others have posted. If you were 30, I'd say give it up.
