Many possibilities,
here are a few
Your sound driver could be corrupt
They may not have power
They may not be connected to the computer
They may not be connected to the computer correctly (they should be in a green plug in the back of the computer.
They Could possibly be blown out (if you abuse these speakers, or crank it really really loud, then you may have blown them out, in which case, you have destroy ed them, or you may need to take them into a service center like Tweeter, or your local music/tv/sound store to have them looked at.
Try using a pair of your headphones that you know work, and connect them to where your speakers were, now try making sound, with a music file that you KNOW works, not a newly downloaded one. One that you have heard before
If no sound, the computer has an internal issue.
The soundcard could be shot, highly unlikely on newer computers.
Make sure that the sound volumes on your computer (Down in the right-bottom corner) that little speaker icon, doubble click it, and the system equalizer should pop up on screen. Turn everything up to the max (it should be there anyway.) Now try.
If that didn't work, try these other things.
What you must must must do before you try anything else is SHUT DOWN (NOT restart) your computer, and let it sit for like, five minutes, NO LESS THAN THIS. Then come back, start your computer again and try again. Sometimes this is all a computer really needs. Remember not to leave your computer on for extended periods of time, it is very very bad for it.
If this still doesnt work, i HIGHLY suggest taking it to your local Best Buy, and having the geek squad look at it. They were AWESOME when they worked on my computer, and there service is very very good (They have a young staff who are indeed, geeks, and know more than most about computers). Try them, they may just say it was so simple, that they will just give it back to you for free. They are very nice and i would like to work there soon.
Hope this helps man, good luck

There are a couple of things I can think of;maybe its your sound card,or you might not have the drivers downloaded! Get on the Internet & go to the help site that supports your computer & that should be able to tell you exactly what is wrong!

Everytime when you click on the volume slide, does it beep, or is there no sound? This happened to me once, and what I did was go to 'Sounds and Audio Device Properties' (You can go here by right clicking the volume icon on the taskbar) and click on the 'sounds' tab, and there is a list of sound schemes. Click the button, and there's a list of sound shemes saved on your computer. Click on 'windows default', and if it asks you to save the prevouis sheme, then click yes, and then OK. Try it. It should work. Or, your speakers may not be connected properly. Good Luck.

If the problem is not with the speakers (I mean disconnect them and re-connect them again to see if it's the problem or turn up the volume), then maybe the sound card has not been installed properly. Right click on My Computer and open Properties. Go to Hardware tab and open Device Manager. If you see the name of your sound or multimedia device with an exclamation mark next to it, then the problem is with your sound card. Double click the name of your sound or multimedia card in Device Manager to open it's own dialog box of properties. You'll see a Reinstall button. Click on the button and insert the accompanying CD that comes with you PC set. Click next and next to reinstall the sound drive (God willing) it will work.

You use the PC troubleshooter? Check the speakers? Not meaning to sound silly, but a lot of times the simple things are simply overlooked. Check the simple things first, and if all of those things are OK you could try this out : http://ssandbs06.system6pro.hop.clickbank.net/

make sure your speakers are plugged in. if they are then look for the little speaker in the bottom right hand side on your screen (you may have to click the arrow to show your inactive icons if you use XP) and make sure every volume is up and nothing is muted. If that doesnt work then you're ******!

You need to load up your sound driver...it should be on one of those CD's that you received with your PC.
