Honey may contain Clostridium botulinum spores that can cause infant botulism - a rare but serious disease that affects the nervous system of young babies (under one year of age). C. botulinum spores are present throughout the environment and may be found in dust, soil and improperly canned foods. Adults and children over one year of age are routinely exposed to, but not normally affected by, C. botulinum spores.

What's more, when honey is applied to burns or wounds, they often heal without leaving scars. Scientists are still asking why this is. But they know that honey contains a large amount of glucose, a very simple sugar. We also know that scar tissue contains a lot of a protein called collagen. One theory is that glucose combines chemically with collagen in such a way that prevents the collagen from forming scar tissue.

Blunt Honesty gave a true and thorough answer about why you should not give honey to infants.

Yes, honey can help prevent infection. It is a potent inhibitor of the growth of bacteria: salmonella, shigella and E. coli. It has been used with sucess for frostbite and burns. It is also a cooling analgesic (pain reliever) for cuts, scratches, boils, animal bites, insect bites.

Honey shouldn't be given to infants because of possible allergic reactions to the pollen and nectar it's made from. Although honey does, indeed, contain natural antibacterial agents to promote its longevity, I'd far prefer using a topical triple antibiotic from the drug store.
