To tell you the truth, these days your really only contending between Seagate and Western digital.

Seagate consumed Maxtor last year, and Maxtor had consumed Quantum some time ago. IBM used to make drives but they were eaten by Hitachi. So all and all, your really only left with those few companies and really if you read the reviews that only leaves Western Digital and Seagate.

In my opinion, I have always liked Western Digital drives, they are cheap and reliable, but in certain cases I have seen alot of the OEM ones die. A few more than the Seagates (barracudas especially) and I have noticed that vs Seagates, the seek chirps are louder on the Western Digitals more often than not, and get louder faster. So for future purchases I'm more willing to get Seagates.

The reason that Hitachi isn't an option is just because of the high failure rate that the IBM "Deathstars" had. I can only hope that Hitachi has improved those models since then, but i highly doubt it.

Hope this helps!

I personally trust only Seagate & Western Digital. They are the two pioneers in hard disk engineering and remain the leaders in performance & technology.

Avoid Maxtor & Quantum. Although generally reliable they have the highest failure rates among the top manufacturers.

I would stay with the bigger brands (Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung even).
