I would say.. low self esteem and not knowing who they are on the inside.. maybe they have a follower persona and they never took time out to ask themeselves is this who I want to be and is this who I am?
I find if you give yourself some attention and find out what you want and who you want to be etc, your own interests etc then you don't need attention or approval from others if your staying true to yourself.

Respect has to do what you think of yourself...popularity has to do with what everybody else thinks of you. If you have no respect for yourself, you are forced to feel good about yourself (validate) based on what others think. Makes taking a stand on an important issue pretty difficult, don't you think?
Edit - squidward - Your assumption is based on the fallacy that men and women are psychologically the same. Men don't require the same kind of emotional validation that women do...it's a fact of life.

i agree with the comment
"for the same reasons men do". therefore the question is not why women do but why "individuals choose popularity over respect

Good question - they all seem to prefer becoming popular sluts rather than repectable........women. All this women freedom and liberation stuff has gone so over the top, they think its their right to walk practically nude on the street but if someone grabs her and manhandles her because he's been enticed by her because of the way she's exposing herself, he is a pervert or a criminal. Don't get me wrong, the guy has no right to do that; but she isn't helping matters, she's making them worse.

they think that by being popular, they are also being respected. what they don't realize is that being an individual is more respectable than following the crowd.

Because they mistake one for the other.
They think that if they're popular, then they're also respected.
