I have purchased a book but what else will I need to get started?
Is it difficult?
How long does it usually take to learn?

You'll need yarn and a crochet hook. It's not that difficult once you learn how to do it. It took me a few days to get it perfect and only about an hour to learn the technique. I think it may be a little harder if you teach yourself, but you'll love it once you learn how to do it.

Look in the book for a chapter about getting started. They should tell you there what you'll need for the project they're teaching you first. You'll need yarn and a crochet hook, but both of these come in vastly differing sizes; check the book and they should tell you what you'll need for the first project.

It's not hard, once you get the hang of it. If the instructions confuse you, read it out loud. That often helps. Or, have someone read it slowly to you as you try to follow along and do whatever it's saying. It may sound silly, but this method is surprisingly effective.

It only takes a few minutes to learn the basics, then you can continue learning new things in crochet all your life. How's that for a scary answer? You really can learn enough in a few minutes to get started on a project and learn your way through the first item you make. Then, if you want to keep growing, there's all kinds of new stuff to learn once you've mastered the basics.

You need a crochet hook and some yarn. Scrap yarn will do for your 1st time. Stick to one or two types of stitches at first. Just make a loop around your finger and put the hook through the loop ,grab some yarn, pull it through the loop you have to form another loop, you'll end up with a chain.Think of it as making knots to hook the yarn together. Make something small like a potholder your first time, then you'll get satisfaction quickly and the desire to go on to something else.

Well some people say that if you learn to knit first then it's harder to learn how to crochet and vice versa. But I learned to knit first and crocheting isn't that hard. It took me 10-15 mins to figure out?

I found it easy. Someone showed me the basic stitch, and i was hooked (no pun here) in 5 min. I learnt the fancier knots here:

The videos are short and clear.
Best of luck!
