I have 1GB memory installed on my computer and all of my slots are full. I was wondering if replacing a memory stick with a larger one would affect anything like storage losses. I know Memory is RAM so its flushed as soon as I shut down, but I'm not sure if there is anyhting permanently installed on there if I swap them.

Well, first off you should be able to swap out a stick of RAM and not lose ANY data. I say should because any time you open the case and start poking at things there's always an increased chance of something going horribly wrong and your computer croaking on you, especially in the winter where static electricity tends to build up a bit more. If you plan on doing any work on the inside of a computer, it's probably not a bad idea to try to find a grounding wrist strap (ESD wrist strap) to avoid any potential damage to the computer components. They're dirt cheap, and well worth a couple of bucks if they save you from cooking a stick of RAM.

You should check with your computer's manufacturer to make sure that you can replace a single stick of RAM, and don't have to do both at once. Many computers now use dual channel RAM which typically needs to be installed in matched pairs, so a little research before you go shopping is in order.

Hope this helps...

Yes you are right,RAM is only a temporary memory and as soon as you shut down all memories will be gone, only a hard disk is a permanent storage.Changing RAM stick wouldn't affect anything.I also have a suggestion for ya.If you want a 2GB RAM,instead of placing a single 2GB RAM stick, you can divide it into 2 one GB RAM stick,by that way you have a better operating speed.

email me with the model and make of you're computer or the model and make of the motherboard and i can tell you. use everesdt home edition if you need to you can get it for free or go to crucial.com and they can check your system. What is storage losses? there shouldn't be anything on the sticks permanently.

You can swap them fine, nothing is stored on them permanently. You just have to make sure your computer will handle the upgraded stick(s)...check out http://www.crucial.com and select your computer or motherboard manufacturer and model to see what it will handle.

you will no longer lose something via changing your ram. it quite is tough to assert which type is acceptable through fact it quite is quite often own selection once you seem on the mainstream manufacturers. i've got consistently offered Corsair, yet i'm useful something are basically as good.

You can but consult your mobo manual! It may need to be installed in pairs! If you dont have the mobo manual, download it from the mobo manufacturers website.
