Ellie was always one of my favorite girlfriends for Andy unlike Helen who I thought had a very unpleasant personality. Why did Elinor Donahue leave the show? Does anyone know if there were issues behind the scenes?

I read that she signed a 3-year contract, but later asked to get out of it. For what reason, I don't know. But can't say for sure, if that's accurate. However, that they had no romantic chemistry, I would agree with that. As far as Helen is concerned, she didn't come along until Season 3. He also had chemistry, I think, with the Joanna Moore character, even more than Helen. I think she played one of the county nurse characters.

Donahue only signed on for a season. The producers thought Helen was a better match for Andy. And he married her! I think people will always think of Elinor as a Father Knows Best character.

I own one season series and she's one of the main reasons. Big mistake by whoever made the choice to dump her.
