Pet are considered property. It all depends on when they were purchased, before or during the marriage. If the pet is worth a lot of money and it was purchased during the marriage, then the one who keeps the pet will have to compensate the other. (Even if the pet was given as a gift during the marriage)

I assume, you mean in the case of divorce? Depends on the situation. When my ex and I were getting divorced, we had two dogs both of which were acquired while we were together. One was "his" dog, the other - "mine". Technically, I could have demanded that "my" dog goes with me after the divorce, and I don't think he would have objected. But "my" dog have known "his" dog since puppyhood, and they were very attached to one another. I couldn't keep both dogs (the other was a 100 lb rott/dobie mix that wouldn't even fit into my tiny apartment), so I didn't feel it was fair to separate them. They went with my ex; "his" dog just passed away at the age of 14, and "mine" still lives with him and his g/f. I tried to ask for her back, but his g/f's child is now too attached to it, so they won't' give it back! LOL It's alright, tho, my husband and I have a lot of pets of our own.
Bottom line - think of what's better for the pets.

It depends on who they are closer too. Plus they are kind of like kids.... it depends on their best interests. Usually the woman keeps them as she usually keeps the house and retains the stable environment. Especially if there are kids about. I let my ex keep the dog as being a single guy would I really have time to care for him? It just all depends.

This totally depends... in my situation she did. The reason why was because she stayed at the house, and the dogs were comfortable there.
We tried to separate the dogs, however it caused separation anxiety on the both of them to the point that neither of them were happy, eating, playing, etc.
It wasn't until I brought the one dog back which I had back to the house that the both of them were happy once again and went back to their normal routine.
Because I cared for the dogs so much, I couldn't separate them again. So I let her have them.
I hope this helps and good luck!

You know, I guess it depends on the lawyer, who puts up the biggest stink over getting them, and who bought them, if they were gifts to the other spouse. It depends.

Whoever the primary owner is in the first place.
Usually one person is considered the primary owner. For our cat, people would say the cat is mine.

I got them because I kept the house. She didn't want them, but three years later got a new kitten.
