I would love to have a database where I can see how much the salary is, what the average house costs, what deductions there are, what petrol costs, groceries, etc.

I usually use www.homefair.com... They have salary calculators that give indication of cost of living in various countries/cities. Also good is bankrate.com

Not really. Numbers can be deceptive. You can know what the average house costs, but not what the average house is. In much of Eastern Europe, for example, the "average house" is a smallish two-room (not two-bedroom, but two-room) apartment. In much of Sub-Saharan Africa, the average house is a hut with dirt floor and no running water. Average incomes are equally deceptive; only within the Natal province in Sounth Africa, there are 54-fold (!) income differences between tribal groups...

the relevant number is how money people HAVE or earn per capita per year

its less than $2 per day for half the world, less than $1 per day for half of those

there are some folks who have farms so they can eat, money or none
