What is the little pocket inside the right hand pocket of a pair of jeans for? I put my zippo or my bank notes in it, but I doubt I've stumbled on the real purpose of it.

I always thought it was for dollar bills (because that would be a difficult pocket to pick!). But the pocket watch argument makes sense.

As I tried to research an answer I also came across the design phrase "coin pocket' which supports my original assumption.
I couldn't find a site with a clear answer but one of these has good potential for being correct.

I suspect it is quite simply a little pocket for little things.
I use mine for my mobile phone, as my main pockets are usually full of other things and if the phone is in there, and starts ringing, the other person is usually tired of waiting by the time I've found it... so the little pocket comes in to its own :-)

for all you people saying the pocket is for condoms...you are way off. I'm not sure WHY it's there, but it's not for condoms.
Condoms are not supposed to be stored at the same temperature as your body. It increases their chances of breaking during usage and dries out the spermicides and lubricants on them.
You are also not supposed to keep them in your wallet for the same reason,

jeans have been here since the 1800's.miners used them mostly so it was probably for a tool or a place to put a cigarette or pocket watch while working.hope this helps!

I always thought it was for coins - so a coin pocket maybe!!! - but like you its great for the lighter!! - unless you have tight skinny jeans on then it can be quite painful when you sit down!!
