i used to do that, i just willed myself with a great motivation. i chewed gum and tucked my hands in my pockets whenever i didn't need them. if not put the nail polish that tastes really REALLY bad, so you wont want to bite them. it works! :)

Good Luck, and i hope you can stop. :)

I've got the same problem - I'll bit my nails like anything! Here's a tip that WORKS (unlike not using toilet paper...)

Go to a salon and have a good set of natural-looking acrylic nails made; you will feel like a queen. DO NOT GET THEM TOO LONG!!! I recommend "French manicure"-style; well-groomed and not to short or too long.

THEN.....always keep lots of carrots with you wherever you go; it helps to chew on something, since for decades you've been chewing on your own nails....

AND ONCE...your own nails are long enough, go back to the same salong *if you liked the job they did with the acrylic nails* and ask for a manicure using your own nails. Many salons offer a treatment for nailbiters or people with brittle nails, where you simply get a layer of gel applied on top of your own nail. It ends up rock hard but with the sheer sheen of a transparent nailpolish.

A WORD OF WARNING THOUGH: you need to keep going to a salon until you stop the habit of biting your nails AND you learnt how to take care of them as well. Normally nailbiters are not used to painting their nails, or even more importantly, giving themselves a normal manicure.

This works. Trust me. I did it myself.

Just try to make your fingers busy with other stuffs then you can not bite your nail anymore. My friends did suggest you bite your toe nail but, never mind, cause' they've got mental problem.

Try hard candy, chewing gum or sunflower seeds. Keep the mouth occupied. You won't become addicted to the candy, gum or seeds but it should help you rid yourself of the nail biting habit.

Use these ways to stop:

Chew gum/candy

Put lemon juice on your fingers and let dry

Wear Nail polish

Have an adult pay you say... 25 cents each day you don't chew your nails until the habit is gone

Vitamin B. Helps that nervous tic that causes nail biting. Try it.

I believe there is a product sold at drug stores for this purpose in the section with nail polish. You put the stuff on your nails daily, it tastes awful. Conditioning at it's best.

As a kid my grandmother used beet juice. She also used caster oil.
