With Macrovision, which is a program used to prevent illegal copying (which I don't believe you are doing unless you plan to distribute the copies), it is hard because the program heavily degrades the quality of the transfer; it's almost not worth watching. There are some "Macrovision busting" VCR/DVD players on the black market but they are illegal.

Copyrighted as in licensing, yes it can be done. Use an analog digital converter. Checkout ADVC100 or DAC100. That's semi pro consumer gear to convert from Analog to Digital and vice versa. There are tons of cheaper ones today though.

VHS -> Analog Digital Converter -> PC Capture Software (Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, etc) -> Burn to DVD with a proper DVD burning software.
