try silk
dying silk either in tie dye, batik or paint techniques all result in individually unique designs.
also Muslin can be purchased in great bulk and dyed or painted, stamped or silk screened.
Look into the Carol Duval show at http://www.hgtv.com
she has a searchable data base and a virtual craft library online with pix, step by steps and links to artists. Each episode has two or three demonstrators and tips and ideas from audience. She's been on the air for years, so that is a fun place to start.

There are other things you could do as well, but the drapability of the fabric might be affected. Dyes will usually create the most supple result, but acrylic paints with "textile medium" added to them can also work well, and can even be thinned all the way down to a watercolor effect.
These can also be applied using sponges, stencils, etc., as well as brushes of various kinds.

You might also want to look into "screen printing" with Versatex paints or similar paints which are thin bodied.

A lot depends on how large the fabric, and if you want to do production runs or just one-of-a-kinds.

Good luck!

Another process you could try is Batik. Do a web search for "batik instructions" to learn more about this ancient art of fabric design. It uses wax and dyes.
