I went to Philly once and we drove through what would be Philly's ghetto. Is Temple Univ. in that part of Philly or the 'good' part like where the white folk live?

I'm African American. I just wanna know if it's a safe place to go to school. It's the only factor left I need to be 100% sure that I wanna go to Temple, no offense.

Temple is in North Philly if you stay on Broad street it isn't to bad in the daytime but the back steet surrounding the school aren't so great.

Temple U is in the hood. It is in the heart of north Philly (a very bad area of the city). However, Temple has bought a vast land area in which it provides well lite streets and increased security. You should be safe going there. Just do not venture out into north Philly. Just be mindful of your surroundings and don't let your guard down. Philly is a great city with a wonderful downtown area. It is rich in culture and year round activities. Temple also is a school with a hugh array of resources.

Also, don't assume that just because you see white skin you are in a safe neighborhood; that is not always the case.

Temple University is most definitely in the hood BUT the Temple campus is very safe to walk around. They have University police constantly patrolling the area and the entire grounds of the campus is very well lit. If you wander around 2am with your guards down somewhere in the back streets then I'd say you're asking for trouble. But really if you use good judgement, you will be A-OK. Philly is a great city that has lots to offer so I'd say go for it. Also it's a campus where you dont really need a car since Center City is so close by as well as the subway. Temple has really developed in the past few years, and the campus has expanded to offer most everything you need within walking distance. Good luck in your decision. I truly enjoyed my years at TU and have some great memories.

What we call "greater Philadelphia" is the Northeast, so no, Temple isn't the northeast. It's in North Philly.

And yeah, North Philly IS the hood. But Temple does a really good job with safety, and the campus itself is nothing like the rest of North Philly. And even though Temple is IN North Philly, the crime rate and safety levels are COMPLETELY different. And the residence halls are in North Philly, too, but safety isn't a problem there, either. So if that's what you're worried about, don't even let it cross your mind. Nothin even worth thinking about.

I'm from Philly and I live in Germantown, which is ALSO the hood, lol. But I go to Temple and it's definitely safer around campus than it is around Germantown or the rest of North Philly.

Just curious--where are you from? If you got anymore questions about Philly or Temple, go head and e-mail me. :)

Temple isn't in the nicest part of town, no. It can be rough in there, but for the most part, if you keep your head on straight and keep yourself out of trouble, you'll be fine. Besides, if you look at Philly on a cloudy night, all of the lights in Center City shine up onto the clouds, but just a little bit to the North is another bright spot reflecting off the clouds...that's Temple underneathe it. It's is practically day-light at all times on Broad Street.

I live walking distance from Temple too though, closer to the Philadelphia Community College, and I've never had a problem. I know there's crime near me, but it never seems to be completely random. Like I said, as long as you use your head, you should be fine....don't walk alone at night, don't start a fight, don't count money on the street while litening to your iPod or something equally stupid...you'll be fine.

If for a moment I pretend that question isn't completely racist, my answer would be "both".

Temple U. is in a very mixed area... some business, some residential, some decent housing, some poor. The campus itself is nice but it's definitely on the border between nicer areas and shady areas. It's pretty close to down-town Philly so it's easy to get to where the good bars, restaurants, shopping, etc. is.

Assuming from your question that you ARE prejudiced and you don't like black people, then you probably won't like the area it's in. My recommendation is to stop being prejudiced.

where are you from? Temple is a very good school. dont let the area scare you away. you have to be on your p's and q's about your sorroundings just like any other place. that question was worded incorrectly if you are not trying to offend anyone. black people live that same as white people. we have average areas and below average areas. if you are going to have that kind of attitude when you come, dont bother coming because it wont be pretty for you
