well, picking cotton was a heck of a chore. you had to stoop and drag a bag of cotton around behind you between rows. it was hot, you had to work all day at it. not like the whiners today that complain about 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week. and on top of that there was no such thing as health insurance.

"Now wait just a cotton picking minute" is a phrase that is kinda funny and was invented out of a source of frustration at having to pick cotton all day long for those that had to actually do so. It's funny that you are considering using this phrase except that you've probably never worked 12-14 hours in a cotton row picking cotton.

What up with that?

My guess is that "cotton-picking" was an adjective that came about during the mid-1800s when slavery was rampant and slaves usually picked cotton on plantations. It has a bad connotation, since slaves were largely viewed as pieces of property.

Since Bugs Bunny used in a cartoon in 1953. ""Just a cotton-pickin' minute, this don't look like the Coachella Valley to me!" Jimmy Townsend deserves no credit.

It come from the African Americans. You know, when they had to pick cotton for their "masta". Another one is "Are you out of your cotton picking mind?"
