Diablo is your best bet. If you're a paladin, then you could kick a lot of *** with your sword. If you're a summoner, then just sit back and watch your summoned skeletons/zombies/trolls (whatever) do the dirty work. Summoner is more fun though. But Diablo is not really a happy game. Everywhere you go is pretty dim and the such, but still, it's fun!

Final Fantasy Xl
I don't know if you can be a summoner or a Paladin, you can select from a wide list of jobs and races, like Dark Knights or Black Mages.
Final Fantasy Xl is a monthly-fee game.

You can be a paladin in World of Warcraft, but unfortunately it's not free.
As far as anime style MMORPGs, check out:
- Maple Story, http://mapleglobal.com
- FlyFF, http://flyff.gpotato.com
Maple Story is 2D, not sure if that matters to you. FlyFF is kind of a mix of anime/cartoony graphics.
The MMO I've seen with the most "anime" like graphics would be Ragnarok Online (http://ragnarokonline.com), but you have to pay a monthly fee for it. They have free trials, though, if you want to check it out.
