They like little crawling animals. In the wild, they dig burrows and put trip wires of webbing at the entrance, so that they can feel any creature walking at the surface. They can sense the size of the prey from the feel of the vibrations on the web. If the animal is just right, they rush out and attack! Mice are a little too large. Insects are generally what they eat. The easiest thing to provide is crickets, becase you can get them at the pet store.

The best thing to feed them is actually crickets, the common house crickets they sell at the pet stores are just fine. Many serious breeders will also feed them things like mice and lizards, but that gets very expensive very quickly. Things like hissing cockroaches and meal worms are also a great meal for a tarantula. They also sell things called butter worms that are also great.
All spiders, tarantulas included will only eat live things, and something like crickets are easily kept alive in captivity, so they can be kept for long periods.

The best thing to do with a tarantula is to set it free in its native enviroment and allow it to find its own food.
