Why would the Braves let Giles go when there isn't anyone as good as him to take his spot? Instead sign Chris Woodward who had a career high batting average of 287. Last year. Junk!

I liked Marcus Giles as a player, but he's endemic of the problems in major league baseball today.

Look, he's a good player...maybe average to slightly above average production for his position. But for the money that you would have to spend to get that average production, you can bring in a youngster and get average to slightly below average production for a fraction of the cost - freeing up money where it can be more wisely spent.

Teams that do this sort of thing are smarter than those who pay $6-8 million per position for average production.

the braves are in the middle of a sale of the team, probably someone who could care less about winning. dumping giles is totally a money thing. many many more money changes will be on the way for the bravos. money is the same reason why andruw jones will not even receive a contract offer next season. its the same reason why tom glavine was not offered a contract this year, even though he wanted to play there. its the same reason why this will be bobby cox's last year (unless he takes a major pay cut.) and finally, its the same reason why the braves made zero improvements from last years team. braves fans better get ready to a different era of braves baseball...unfornately.

Woodward was signed to compete with Pete Orr for the utility spot, not to replace Giles. The starting second baseman's job will go to either Kelly Johnson or Martin Prado, with Manny Aybar a longshot. Johnson played left field last season, but they're thinking about moving him to the IF.

I think Giles is better than any of them, but he was horrible last season and it would be tough justifying spending much on him.

It was a salary issue and nothing more. The Braves didn't feel Giles was worth what he was going to be getting paid in 2007 and it made more sense, financially, for the team to cut him loose and let a younger player try to step up and earn the second base job in spring training.

I have an awfully hard time understanding some of the trades that John Shuerholtz makes as well as you. But other than this past year it seems to work.
