Nobody will truly know where we are going until something actually happens. Personally, I hate it when people run around saying the country is going down the drain. There will always be people around the world who think things are going to become chaotic. 99.9% of the time, these people are being paranoid, and nothing crazy is going to happen. The other 0.01% is the time when it actually is going to happen, and that 0.01% represents the end of the world. Notice how we're still a country and still alive after everyone said the world would end in the year 2000.
But for whatever reason, our country is doing fine, in comparison to other trying times (WWII, Cuban Missile Crises, etc. etc.)

Maybe all countries can only go downhill. When good has to constantly compromise with evil, only evil can claim victories day after day until all good is gone.

Any compromise represents good being watered down and evil advancing another step. Next thing, individual heroes who represent the ideals of a nation become marginalized, while frivolous people, ineffective groups and power grabbing socialist programs become the collective focus. It happened in Rome, It happened in the British empire, and it is happening here.

Show me a nation that has even gotten better over time.

With the Dems. in power in the Senate and House and a Presidential election that could put a Dem. in the White House things are looking bleak for us. More taxes, more welfare, cut national defense, give away our tax money to those who do not qualify as being needy (only lazy)............ This is the result of the dumbing of America that has been going on for two decades at least. Too many people "want it now and want it free". Too many people think they are "entitled" without having contributed. Too many people criticize the rich when, in fact, the rich pay the most taxes and are responsible for creating the most jobs. It's time for these types to become accountable and responsible for themselves.

I think the war in Iraq is affecting nearly every aspect of this country, now and for the foreseeable future. It is a positive sign that the democrats have gained control of both houses. It is also encouraging to see George Bush losing his allusions that we are "winning" in Iraq. The future depends on whether he "stays the course", as has been the policy for 3&1/2 years, or finally heeds the advice of advisors and the rest of the country and changes direction.
