Most of us don't want to see ourselves being cut open. And even if someone thinks they can handle it, it may still cause stress, raising blood pressure, not to mention some people may totally panic on the table and try to move causing further injury.

Hi honey. I had four C-sections so I feel that I can answer your question pretty well. I am sure that the reasons that the others who answered your question gave are probably very relevent and there is not alot I can add to what has been said. But....I think I understand why you are asking. If you are awake, assuming that you had a spinal so that you could be awake when your baby is born, you can ask them to move that cover. That is what I did and I got to see all of my babies born. It was an incredible experience. Because of the way that you are draped you do not see anything but a small opening between all the sheets that they have in the way. You will be so excited at getting that first glimpse of your baby that the baby is all you will see! I know, and all I saw was that baby! I watched them pull this beautiful little baby out and then I was looking into his/her face and that was all I ever saw after that point! They always gave me the baby right away and I am sure they re-draped me so they could finish putting everything back in order, but I couldn't have cared less! I was so busy examining my baby, counting fingers and toes and oohing and ahhing, that I totally forgot what they were doing. They even let me nurse my babies. I never felt like I missed anything by having a C-section , except maybe the pain! I never felt anything from the time that they did the spinal and I got to watch my babies being born. I do suppose that you would have to ask and if that does not work try insisting! You will not be sorry. If there is anything else you would like to ask from somewhere who has been there (4 times!) feel free to write to me.
Love and Blessings

I am a surgical tech in the OR and have scrubbed in on many c-sections. The sheet is put up to maintain a sterile field and not for any other reason. Not breaking a sterile field is huge thing in the OR. Also, they do not remove your stomach, guts, etc. when they do a c-section. They take out the uterus after the baby has been delivered and place it on top of the upper abdomen to stitch it back up, but that's the ony thing they take out. It's not really that bloody either because they use a bovie to cut after the initial incision is made and the assistant uses suction. The messiest part is when they actually break the water to get the baby out, that goes everywhere. I have had my pants soaked up to my ankles before. The husbands are allowed to watch if they want as long as they do not cross the sterile field. Trust me you will know if you come anywhere close to it my any one, if not all, of the members of the OR team.

It's so that she (or the father, if he is in there) can't see their abdomen being cut open- which would really freak most people out.
Of course, I would want to watch. A friend of mine wanted to watch and was told no by the Dr., but a nurse adjusted the light (which had a shiny reflective cover) just right so she could watch the whole thing.

I had two C sections too and i'm with the others..i wouldn't want to see what was going on. Most people who say they aren't queasy about such things haven't seen their body cut open and then their uterus taken out to sew it back together after the baby is removed. The last thing they need to have happen is the woman start to heave while they have her opened in that area.

I've had a c-section, twice, and I personally would not have enjoyed watching the doctor, cut me open, take the baby out, move my organs around, then sew me up. I would think that would add unnecessary stress to the mother during delivery.
Think about this for a minute and visualize what you might see and how you would feel---it might even take some of the joy out of delivery and replace it with fear!

well I never had a c-section but from what I would have to only gather is that the dr.s probably don't want the woman to see her stomach cut open and her being gutted like a fish. I am assuming there is blood everywhere and it most likely isn't a pretty site. Why would you want to see that anyway? Just thinking of it makes me queezy

My wife delivered both our kids c-sec, and I was in the room with her. They probably use the screen to hide the surgical procedure from her, because it's pretty graphic. I watched the doctor make the incision, and then I'm not sure what it was, but he put (probably) her stomach and some guts up on top, I guess to get them out of the way??? (not sure those were the exact organs, but I'm not a Dr.) It would probably be upsetting to see that yourself.

It's darned weird, isn't it? I went through that, and the surgeons didn't even say a word while they were working on me. The first thing I even heard was my kid howling. (The first of many screams to come.)
My guess is that they just don't want us to see them operating on us and freak out. That would especially be the case if someone is with you for moral support. That person would really get a clear view and might even faint, which would distract the surgeons from their work.
Best wishes -

I would say that is the reason so you cannot see what is going on. Would you want to see them cutting you, pulling and digging into you? Not I.
I made sure i was put under while i had my c-section. I did not want to be awake to be knowing i was getting cut open
