Or did he use to have a communist mentality?

He was accused of being a communist. One man who worked for him (possibly a speechwriter) had been a member of the Communist Party for a short time, but once this became public and King took flak for it, the man lost his position.

There was an interview in which he said he thought it was a testament to the strength of the black character that so few in this country had turned to communism despite their position.

Like many others (Jesus, for example), he said and believed things that are socialistic or communistic in nature, but that would not make him a communist, as communists specifically believe in the violent overthrow of government in order to establish a dictatorship (of the working class, theoretically). Socialist may be a decent descriptive word for some of his beliefs, but not others.

No.

That was a Christian mentality. One shouldn't mistake concern for society's least fortunate with Communism, unless you'd like to write off Jesus and most religious thinkers as Communist as well.

(King's political thought also influenced by Gandhi, who also was not a Communist.)

At one time in his life he attended a Communist rally. The FBI tried to capitalize on that as proof that he was a commie to discredit him, but nothing really points to him being one.

No, Communists are atheists, and King was a Christian minister.
