I just came back from my doctors appointment and am scheduled to be induced on 12/27 (my due date is xmas) because my cervix hasnt even started to even efface....the doctor was telling me that she would start by inserting cytotek into my cervix to get it to ripen. Has anyone used this to be induced? Is it safe?

I don't think a doctor would use a method that is not safe for you or the baby. Relax you'll be fine. Congrads by the way!

Because your cervix is not yet effaced, is not a valid reason to induce. Are you being induced for any other reason? You can start taking Evening Primrose Oil now, by a couple of capsules by mouth once a day, and then 1 or 2 capsules inserted next to the cervix at bedtime. Evening Primrose Oil is used by midwives to ripen the cervix. Some women can have their cervix be hard and closed one day, yet go into labor the following day. It is not really something to go by, although it is more promising that labor will start soon if your cervix is softening and thinning out.
Here's some info on Cytotec that I give to my clients- it is a VERY controversial drug. The FDA has not approved it for inducing labor. If you google it, you will find out more info.
Misoprostal (Cytotec)
This is a pill that can either be ingested orally or placed near the cervix. It is used more often when the cervix is not very favorable. It is not approved by the FDA for this purpose. This is a controversial drug.
Benefits: May cause uterine contractions and dilation of the cervix
Disadvantages: Uterine hyperstimulation, fetal distress, possible excessive fluid retention, continuous fetal monitoring. . Can cause a very rapid labor. Recent thought is that this is not a valid option for mothers who are attempting VBAC, discuss this with your practitioner.

is it the same as pitocin? i had pitocin (speling?) to induce my labor and im sure your doc would use it if it wasnt safe. youll prolly have a hatder labor than would be normal ,bur it may be drastically shorter. my labor was ny 5 hours ong , the worstof it lasting about 1.5 hours.... if u have doubts ask ur docotr and go to googke.com, type "define:cytotek" in the search box. it should bring up some definitions and webpages on it.

cytotek is one of the drugs that make up ru-486 also known as the abortion pill. I was induced with this without being told what it really was. Please do NOT let your doctor induce you with this. My daughter's heart-rate dropped dramatically before I delivered thanks to that pill. Thank God she was fine and I delivered in time. What ever happened to being aloud to go a week or 2 over? Let your doctor give you pitocin, cervical gel, anything but cytotek.

It is NOT safe. The FDA warns against it!

There are also a million reasons why you should *NOT* be induced, but that isn't what you asked so I shall bite my tongue.
