Most of them suck because it never matches up to the first movie. When the first movie is made and it's great and makes a lot of money, the studio says "hey lets do a sequel and make more money" but some of the same actors don't come back or it's not written as well or not directed by the same guy and it just doesn't match up to the original.
Some exceptions are: Godfather II, Terminator 2

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is considered by many to be significantly better than the the Star Wars: A New Hope (the first one made).
Also, many prefer Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers over Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.
In these cases, the second movie is at least on the same tier as the first -- if not better.

This is very difficult to write, but objectively (as far as critiquing films go), I must say that The Empire Strikes Back (aka Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire...) was a better movie overall than its predecessor (Star Wars, aka Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope). In terms of dialogue, acting, special effects, and score are concerned, it's a no-brainer. Granted, the original changed movie-making history - it was a revolution all on its own. TESB might be the best plot twist and cliff-hanger of the 20th century.
I also think the second installment of the Lord of the Rings (The Two Towers) was better than the first (Fellowship of the Ring).
And, Aliens was better than Alien, but neither was a truly great film.

American pie 2 was better than the first and American wedding was even better. Also Next friday was good, I think it only suck when it's like a scary movie.

Does Harry Potter count? Also, I personally enjoyed the second Toy Story more than the first..other than that, the first movies are usually best and should stay the only one.

In my opinion Dawn of the Dead
was better than Night of the Living Dead.
Also Empire was better than A New Hope.
but most of the time the sequels do suck.

I thought the second Resident Evil movie was better than the first. I still thought the first one was good though.
