I have a friend who quit by shortening his arms. Made it impossible to raise a cig up to his mouth, and nobody would help him smoke. It worked! Then he died the next week from the infection I caused helping him shorten his arms.
Seriously though, good question. As a smoker I would like to know. I've done the cold turkey thing before, can only seem to last at most 1 yr.

I never smoke very much when I did smoke. I had started running and it got to a point where I had to quit smoking or quit running. I chose running.

First, you have to have the desire to quit. Put a purpose to that desire and this gives you the will to do better. (If not, say you're doing it for yourself...for your health).
Then, go look for and attend a "smoking cessation" class (Kaiser offers them for free to members). The classes prepare you on what to expect when you quit, and provide you with ways and means to keep the cravings to a minimum. They also provide you with people you can share your experiences with and vice versa. They can also provide you with patches and/or pills that help you when you quit.
Once you've stopped, keep convincing yourself "I don't need it" and remember your purpose. Keep in touch with your cessation instructor or members of your group. Find something new to keep you occupied...sports...a new hobby...
I've been "clean" to date...since October 2003, so those classes must have been a big help.
Good luck...!

Cold turkey worked the best for me. I just picked a day and decided that that was the day that I was going to quit.

I started running marathons (no joke) I had to quit because it killed my lung capacity. Its amazing how fast you regain the lung capacity after quitting. You should try it.

luckily it wasn't that difficult for me to quit, thanks to pregnancy. my morning sickness was really bad, and any time i took a drag i felt like i was going to puke my guts up. i know it's not a traditional stop smoking method, but it worked for me! good luck!
