My RE (fertility specialist) said these things can help, but wont guarantee, a certain gender conception.
For a girl:
Have the man withhold ejaculation for 3 days...then 3 days prior to ovulation have sex and not again until after your sure you've ovulated.
The female sperm swim slower but live longer. The further away from ovulation you have sex the better because male sperm swim faster.
For a boy:
Have sex the day before or the day of ovulation in the doggy style position. This puts the sperm closer to your cervix. Male sperm swim faster (but die off sooner than female), so having sex closer to ovulation will help them beat out the females. Also have him drink caffine an hour before sex.
Either way its 50/50 but my dr said this helps.

From what I have heard, it's possible. The sperm produced to create females is older and male sperm is more "fresh". In this case, if a person was trying for a girl, they'd be more likely to conceive one having sex three days before ovulation is to occur. And, if they were trying for a boy, it would be likely to conceive one by having sex the day before ovulation.
This is an actual study that has been proved but doesn't work 100% for all people but then again what is 100% sure anyway?

I think there are certain theories about timing of intercourse in influencing sex of the baby, but the evidence isn't conclusive and I wouldn't plan a nursery theme by it!
from http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/preconception/gettingpregnant/2915.html
Shettles method
What it is
Timed intercourse on specific days of your cycle.
Effectiveness
Shettles proponents claim the technique is 75 percent effective, but other experts dispute this. Keep in mind that you always have about a 50 percent chance of conceiving the sex you want.
How it's done
The theory is that sperm bearing Y chromosomes (for boys) move faster but don't live as long as sperm that carry X chromosomes (for girls). So if you want a boy, the Shettles method argues, you should have sex as close as possible to ovulation. If you want a girl, you should have sex two to four days before you ovulate.
Pros
• Requires no drugs or invasive medical procedures.
• Free or low cost.
• Relatively safe.
Cons
• You must take your basal body temperature every day to figure out when you're ovulating, or use an ovulation prediction kit.
• There's no guarantee of success.
Availability
Anyone can try it.
For more information
• Learn more about charting your basal body temperature and ovulation predictor kits.

Whelan method
What it is
Timed intercourse on specific days of your cycle.
Effectiveness
Whelan claims her technique is 68 percent effective for boys and 56 percent effective for girls, but many experts dispute this. Keep in mind that you always have a 50 percent chance of conceiving the sex you want.
How it's done
The Whelan method directly contradicts the Shettles method. The theory here is that biochemical changes that may favor boy-producing sperm occur earlier in a woman's cycle. So if you want a boy, you should have intercourse four to six days before your basal body temperature goes up. If you want a girl you should have sex two to three days before you ovulate.
Pros
• Requires no drugs or invasive medical procedures.
• Free or low cost.
• Safe.
Cons
• You must take your basal body temperature every day to figure out when you're ovulating, or use an ovulation prediction kit.
• There's no guarantee of success.
Availability
Anyone can try it at home.

I was told to increase your chances for a girl is to TTC prior to ovulation. The reason being is that the female sperm tend to be slower & linger around longer. To try for a boy is to TTC the day of ovulation & the day after. The male sperm are faster & tend to go where they need to. Now, is this a myth? It could be, Of course their are no guarantees, but you can always try. Best of Luck!
