It depends on how long you've know the person and your interests. If you have just met the person, I would agree with the person above and go out someplace with a log of people around, ie, no personal or intimate dinner or anything like that. Maybe you can make it a "day" date on a Saturday or Sunday, a place where its not too loud so you could find out more about this person.
Have Fun and Good Luck.

The WORST place to go is a movie. Going on a date is to get to know the person, right? Well, how are you getting to know them sitting in a dark room for 1 1/2 hours, not talking? I find that the best place is a coffee shop, or if you don't like coffee, a smoothie bar.

Eating gets in the way of talking, and can lead to those embarassing first date moments (ex: girl not wanting to eat in front of guy, pizza sauce on shirt, spinach in teeth, etc.)

Clubs and non-martini bars are also a bar idea. They are too loud and you can't have a one on one convo.

A shop where you can sip a drink and maybe leave and walk around really gets to where the date should really go, and that's getting to know the person you're out with. So since this is the 'dining out' section, I'd say Starbucks. They have a nice selection of drinks, and SMALL treats (coffee cake, cookies, brownies, etc) to nibble at. Plus its a much more casual place to ask someone out to.

I dont think there is an absolute answer to this one but there are some simple guidelines you can follow.

First of all, don't go out drinking. Alcohol reduces your inhibitions (and hers) and while you might end up getting laid, you probably won't build any kind of healthy relationship.

Secondly, don't go to the movies. Why would you want to stare a screen for 2 hours saying nothing when you are trying to get to know this person?

A first date should be spent somewhere casual where you two can talk freely. I personally like meeting people at a coffee shop for coffee and if we like each other we can decide if we want to go do something else. Coffee shops are good neutral ground for first dates and it's easy to get out of it if you aren't having a good time.

On one date, a boy and I went to the duck pond with our little brothers. Sledding could be really fun. Service projects (Like shoveling snow for the elderly, or putting up Christmas lights) are always a great thing, because they can be loads of fun, and you will find out if your date enjoys helping others. I guarantee that you will have much more fun if you go in big group date, that way the conversation never lulls, and it's harder to get in to awkward situations. Can't think of anything at all? Head down to the local Walmart with Frisbees and water guns (just don't get caught with the water guns).

A fairly nice but not overpriced place to eat. Like pasta house or something. Then walking through a park or through a populated downtown area. Maybe a stop by a sports bar/grill type of place to watch a game and have a few drinks.
