Well, it sure sounds like you have the same problem we had with ours. We just found the problem after months of cleanings, etc... the original X-Box has a Thompson drive built-in... lousy. They just do not last... get it replaced with a Phillips. We paid $35 for the Phillips drive and $50 to have someone replace it, which after seeing done, takes a few minutes and one could easily do themselves - and there are many self-repair guides available online. Also, check all connections to make sure they are secure. Make sure you do NOT get rid of your old X-Box or trade-up for a 360 unit, because there are still many games you may already own that will not ever be compatible with the 360. good luck.

P.S.>>> if anyone you know buys an X-Box 360, make sure they also purchase Microsoft's 2-year extended warranty replacement coverage for only $50 immediately or chances are you will be very sorry. It is an absolute MUST for any 360 owner... we are talking about a Microsoft product, after all.

TRY THIS BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE make sure the video cord is pushed in all the way the one that comes out to yellow red white. If its not plugged in all the way it will display a solid red light when you turn it on. I am talking about the side going into the XBOX make sure it has clicked in. I had this same problem
