It's been almost 8 years since we last spoke, and I still dream about him. He broke my heart and I had to let him go. We attempted to be friends, but one day, we just never spoke to each other again. Completely abrupt. So why is he still so present in my dreams?!?

Probably because subconsciously you feel that there is some unfinished 'business' in this relationship.

Few possbilities.
1. Anger - if you have current relationship now, he probably symbolizes some sort of anger you had. In your dream, a slight argument will trigger him to be alive in your dream because that represent anger.
2. Guilt - You may have some guilt conscience about the break up. Draming of him could vent out your guilty feeling
3. Reminder of happiness - if you dream about happy moment, he probably stamped hard in your mind and serves as reminder of good times. After all, he was once in your life!
4. Social talk, media effect- If you heard about people taking about ex, that may lurk into your mind. That experience will never leave you. If you watch TV, News, Movie that has some "EX" character mentioned, that could trigger you to dream that.

Maybe you and he split with unresolved issues and these issues are still lingering and you want these to go away but they cant until you get them resolved for you to feel better.
