Nothing fake about it. Just try not to land on your head.

I'll use a powerbomb as an example. Batista is about to powerbomb Finlay, it's Batista's job to be strong enough to lift Finlay up in the air and make sure he's got him in a good position where Finlay will land on his back and not his neck, and Finlay has to make sure he can get his body upright so the weight will be easier for Batista to perform the move. I've seen several times where Booker T had a hard time getting himself in a right position for a powerbomb and almost land on his neck. Ouch!

Most of the time, it is the ring in its self that allows for the high impact moves.
Also the tables are specially made to cushion, so when people are thrown from something high, the table breaks their fall.
Many moves, if seen closely, like the Tombstone Piledriver, you can see the wrestler's head never hits the floor.
However, many of times, the wrestlers take huge bumps, most recently, Joey Mercury getting hit with a ladder at Armageddon, and Carlito hitting his head on a camera this past Monday Night on RAW

You dont slam them as much as put them down, so its less force. Other than that you fall in a way that doesnt risk whiplash or neck injury and take the pain.
Hitting the mat really does hurt like hell. It has a little give, but its still really thick wood.
I wrestled in independent companies. When you hit the mat it hurts like hell. If you dont exhale on the way down it can knock the breath out of you.

It's all in how they land. They're trained to land flat on their backs, which maximizes surface area, minimizing damage. Plus, they're on a foam-padded canvas on a big sheet of plywood, which basically turns it into a trampoline.

They don't fake it. They practice how they are going to land and make sure they don't hurt themselves very badly. But they dont fake it.
