All documentaation for my PC says I should have 512Mb RAm and I'm sure it used to say that when I checked the properties in My Computer, but now it says I have 384 Mb. Is it possible to lose RAm and more importantly can it be recovered?

what it is, is that you maybe do have 512mb RAM but some of it will be in use so you will never have that amount free. what it is telling you is that at that moment you had 384mb of RAM free.

also make sure that your RAM is 512 as 384 is a combination of 256 and 128, which would mean if you have two RAM cards then one of them is half the size of the other. if you only have 1 RAM card then it is possible it was just in use.

Ha ha... NO, ram is physical, so you can't loose it unless it gets damaged. Now, the best answer to your question, i that you have an integrated video adapter that alocates your ram to become "video memory".. Lets say that your computer has 128 mb video card that utilizes RAM to become video ram. Well, 512RAM-128"allocated for video"= 384 usable! there you go! This is nothing to worry about, but you may consider adding more ram or getting a non-integrated video adapter (if that's the case) cause nowadays 384 mb is not enough ;)...

Yes, if the ram has become corrupted, it is possible. Make sure the ram is compatible with your system and that the slot is not malfunctioning. Easy way to tell is to switch one slot for the other. If numbers go back to where they should, then perhaps one stick did not like that slot but other likes better. If numbers do not change, check your ram integrity.

Loss of RAM can be a sign of a virus hiding in memory, but 128 MB is too big and too tidy a figure for this. I wonder if your video adapter or card is one of those, which can use system RAM.

Install Belarc Advisor. It is free.

The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware (memory), missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

128MB of RAM is lost due to the on-board graphics card and yes the memory can be recovered if you bought a dedicated graphics card and disabled the on-board graphics card.
