Black boxes don't fly. The material is designed for impact and heat survival not flight.

good old, and cute, joke ;-)
the boring / nerdy / serious answer is that the box survives the crash because it is made of very thick and hard material, which also tends to be very heavy. If you made planes in that material, they would not fly. Thus they would never crash, thus you would not need black boxes in the first place, ha! ;-)
Which reminds me, I have a friend who knows the aerospace industry really well. Remember the security demonstrations, "in the event of an emergency landing on ground or water"? Well, that friend once told me: "you know, a plane is basically a large aluminium pipe with very thin walls. Large aluminium pipes with very thin walls don't land, they crash". (Soda cans don't, but that's because they have specially designed, thick fronts and backs with hard rims).

thats a good question. but a black box is made up of a material of the same material as a plane its just the way its insulated and protected.

Because the plane would be so heavy that it wouldn't take off, and therefore would never crash, and therefore we wouldn't need the black box to tell us how it crashed.

The weight of the material used for the black box.
The wheels wouldn't even be able to support the weight of such, thus wouldn't be able to take off!
