im having a pelvic-transvaginal ultrasound. i was told to drink 32 oz. of water 45 mins before the exam. i have a very small bladder, will have to pee every 5 mins from drinking that much at once. will i be able to use the bathroom or will i have to hold it until the ultrasound is done?? if i have to hold it, how did any of you handle that?

You need to hold the urine, if at all possible. A REALLY full bladder makes it easier for the sonographer to visualize all the female organs. If you absolutely can't hold the urine before the procedure, you need to VERY CAREFULLY go to the bathroom and release just a little urine to take some of the pressure off. But if you go too much, the results of the ultrasound will be compromised.

If they do a pelvic, yes you will have to hold it. If they do a transvaginal, usually they have you empty your bladder first. What they'll probably do is the pelvic first, have you go pee, and then come back for the transvag. I've had numerous sonograms for various reasons and have the same small bladder issue. I live 30 mins from my doctor's office and usually start drinking the water about 10 mins before I leave, but finish drinking it on the way. That way I'm done before I get there, but I'm not ready to burst and wiggling on the table. It has always worked for me. I know they technically want you to have the water done 30 mins before,but.....
I think as long as you start getting the feeling you gotta go when you get to the office you are fine.

I think that's weird because my ultrasound technician at my doctor's office never tells me to drink anything before my ultrasounds. I just go in and she does it. And the results are fine, but I have heard many women report that they were instructed to drink a lot beforehand.

You can't pee after you drink the liquid, or that defeats the purpose.

But I will say this: a transvaginal ultrasound won't take long at all, because I am assuming you are less than 8 weeks along. If you have an ultrasound at 12 weeks or 21 weeks, those take a long time because they are more comprehensive and there is more to see and measure, etc.

I went in for an ultrasound with my bladder just full to bursting :( I didn't handle it very well, I just played solitaire on my phone to try to keep busy while waiting.

As it turned out, I actually had too much fluid in my bladder, and it was making the baby hard to see. The technician gave me a cup and told me to pee up to a certain line, and we tried again. It felt great to at least pee some, but very hard to fight the urge to empty my bladder completely.

I ended up having to pee small amounts twice more until she was satisfied about seeing the baby completely. When it was done I was able to go 'finish what I started' :)

Another thought is maybe you can reschedule your appointment to be the first patient they see during the day. Then you won't be stuck with a full bladder waiting on however many other women. Best of luck to you!

Oh I hate doing that!!! I had 4 transvag ultrasounds (aka the cooter wand) done and about burst each time. You do have to hold it, your bladder has to be very full for those ultrasounds so they can get an accurate scan done.
You know your body and how long it takes for your bladder to get full. I'd take that into consideration on how far in advance to your appointment you drink it. I'd say maybe drink it on the way there or in the waiting room depending on how fast you fill up.

Hey hun!! I've never had one done but been looking them up on the net, Apparently they can determine whether you have PCOS, endometriosis, Uterine tumours, Ovarian cysts, cancer of the womb, Pelvic inflammatory disease, depending on what time in your cycle you have your scan - I am pretty sure they can determine whether you are ovulating. The one thing I wanted checking was my fallopian tubes, as I've had PID I am so worried about having an ectopic pregnancy, I would have requested a laproscopy had I not fallen pregnant. If they see nothing wrong on scan they will then send you for this procedure also. Good luck huni - You certainly don't look like you need to diet! Aww I really hope you get your BFP soon xxxx This website is quite informative I would take a look if I were you hun xxx

Usually you are asked to drink water to fill your bladder so that a more accurate reading will take place... no one wants to have to do another!... For more information, I would call the lab where you are to have the test done and ask the specifics of the test, whether you can use the facilities or have to hold it.

Best of luck

:)

how I handled it was just suck it up. It's easier for the dr/technicians to see the baby when your bladder is full. Yes, it is uncomfortable but I highly doubt you will pee yourself. If it is that uncomfortable go through with it as long as you possibly can and then tell the dr./technician that you need to go and go now.

Good Luck to You.
