I guess the way I look at it, good fortune is gauged upon someone's opinion of how 'rich' they are. For example, you could be of good fortune in family, spirit, health and well being, etc. etc. There are a lot of people who have been 'fortunate' to experience riches with money and materials, but are STILL not fulfilled in their lives. Go figure. I guess money, riches and having all the 'bling' you can imagine isn't enough when you have an unrich spirit and life. Some people believe that having 'good fortune' means just being able to wake up every morning. They don't worry about being wealthy. I think that's how I want to look at it.

I think your question is "Given two people in similar situations, one seems to have everything go right and the other doesn't"
If that's the question there are a lot of factors to consider. Lets take a look at some.
Personality. The more likable person will have more opportunities because others are more inclined to work with somebody they like.
Appearance. The same is true for the more attractive person. People are going to work with them more easily, especially if they are likable too.
Thinking. I don't mean intelligence although it plays some role. However, many brilliant people are broke because they don't think about what they are doing. Planning and careful consideration are important points in success.
Effort. So many people think that having knowledge or looks or brains or a good idea will make them successful. Ask any successful person and they'll tell you that they have made their own luck by always trying to accomplish something. Sooner or later things work for anybody who tries hard enough. The more you do the greater the odds are that eventually you'll hit on something that works for you.
The first poster in this thread is implying that the answers are either socialism or communism. History has demonstrated that neither works for any length of time. All such structures eventually collapse. Capitalism is the only social structure that has shown itself to work reliably for years on end.

I don't think there is such a thing as fortune. We're all born in certain circumstances with certain abilities. You could call that "fortune" but it's really just chance.
We can't really choose our parents or our abilities, so where we go from there is completely up to us... and our environment.
Sometimes it is possible to be "lucky" in life, but often those circumstances are again, the workings of chance.
It is chance to be born into a privileged household, although, it is chance to be born at all. It's chance that you find out about a certain school, chance that your abilities are what they are. Of course we make our own decisions in life, but before all that, our foundations are laid by chance. And chance continues to affect us throughout our lives, whether we acknowledge it or not.
So since there is no such thing as "luck" or "fortune" or even "fate", there is just chance in the world, and each situation deals with a different probability. We are the sum of these chances, and of our decisions. We are seperate creations, not really comparable to those around us.

This is direct and proportional in turns to the current economic system, and the ensuing economic strife present. Capitalism creates a world for the minority which is insensible because the majority of a democratic nation are suffering. As Aristotle said, "some men are born to be slaves, and others born to be masters", in such a economic system which is currently prevalent throughout the world those born to the wealthy for the most part remain wealthy, likewise is said of the poorer classes. Indeed the lack of capital creates much depression and discension among the populace in which every thought is occupied by the fact of loss, and the thought that it had taken much labour to have earned the slight currency in your arms which you are exchanging for a very low amount. Seriously this is getting worse and worse, the minimum wage currently in G8 nations is on average $7> which is riduculous considering the expenses, a Second Cup or Starbucks drink and accessory costs this much.

It's all a mixture of how you look, the money you have, and whether or not you are willing to "go along to get along". Even if it means selling out who you really are. Bottom line, If bad fortune is yours at the present, try to obtain wealth without selling out and then when you have it, you will be in control of your life and do whatever you please. Good Luck!

I wonder what you are calling good? I think that pretty much what goes around comes around. I think that we all have some good luck and some bad luck and fortune, some times people are born with silver spoons.

I've heard that attitude, confidence and knowing what you want will get you ahead, although bad luck, random calamities, and other unforeseen circumstances will pop-up regardless if you're good or bad. To think nice people are somehow immune to the laws of nature or that evil people somehow get a special bonus is to begin thinking like a CAVE MAN using CAVE MAN logic.
