The terms date from the Cold War and are, therefore, slightly out-of-date.

1st World = Western Democracies: USA, Canada, Western Europe, etc.
2nd World = the (then) Communist countries: USSR, Peoples Republic of China, etc.
3rd World countries = the rest. Generally poorer and less politically stable.

First second and third, were words coined at the beginning of the XX century, when many people traveled in trains and ships. You could get first ( luxury), second ( so so) and third ( hard seats) class tickets.

First world was by analogy used to describe a society which was developed and only a minority of its citizens were poor.

There were a few countries, mostly socialistic, where great economic growth was channeled just to benefit a few. Such as the former Soviet Union or its satellites. Second world also defined countries such as Spain, Turkey, South Korea and Portugal, which about 60 years ago were in transition to become first world..

The rest was third world, underdeveloped nations, basically most if not all of Latin America, most of Africa, and Asia, etc. etc.

Third world countries have an economy all about the people with in the country growing what they need to survive. They have little mechanization. Much of the farming they do is by man or beast powered items. People really work to survive there.

1st world counties have an economy that stretches far outside the normal person can get goods made anywhere in the world, not just from his own town.

It's a term that has been used differently over the years. Most recently it has been used in cold war context, before it was meant in the chain of discovery:

First world = Europe
Second world = Americas
Third world = the rest.

The terms date from the mid-20th century and are somewhat out of date. Basically it was:

First World - industrialized nations, generally with capitalist and democratic regimes

Second World - the Communist Bloc

Third World - "developing" nations that had not be absorbed into the Capitalist/Communist dichotomy. There was an underlying assumption that they would someday join one or the other. There was no perceived alternate path.

Actually, nowadays, it is politically incorrect to call a country first- or third-world. They are only developed, or developing. Hence, South Africa and Sudan would both be under "developing" and countries like America would be "developed". In this way, it eliminates any talk of first-, second-, or third-world classifications.

third world - countries not aligned with either the US or the former USSR

second world - countries aligned with the former USSR

first world - countries aligned with the USA

The first world continues as before, the second world has pretty much melded with the third world, and together they are the poor ones
