I am going to be in San Diego for a week during July. I will be traveling with my 4 yr. old son. We would like to be on or near the beach. I would prefer a room with a kitchenette, but it is not necessary. I can spend around $250 a night. It doesn't have to be the newest, most modern place, but it does need to be family friendly, quiet and clean. Any suggestions?

Also, besides Sea World, the zoo, and the beach, are there any other things we could do as a family? Keep in mind a 4 yr. old's attention span and potential crankiness.

For around $250 you should have no problem. You could look into Extended Stay Hotels at that time they will probably run in the 120$-150$ for a decent location. There is one in the area called Hotel Circle/Mission Valley which is about 10 minutes away from the beach. I've never stayed at this one specifically but have at others in the chain and they were decent.

You already mentioned the Zoo, Sea World and the Beach which are good. There is also Balboa Park which is right next to the Zoo and has several museums. One your son may particulary might like is the Ruben H. Fleet Space Center, Natural History Museum, the Train Museum, and Aerospace Museum.

Check out the several hotels on Harbor Island and Mission Bay. It has been too many years since I lived there to remember their names but I did spend my honeymoon on Harbor Island.

For hotels on the beach go to http://www.sandiego-romantics.com.

You might want to try Lego Land. It's suppose to be a great place for younger children.
