Your computer should have come with a CD/DVD authoring program installed (Look for Nero or Roxio).
You open the program, select what type of CD/DVD you want to make (data, music, video, etc), add your files, put a blank disc in the drive and burn it. There will be help files in the program that can give you more specific instructions.

If you are burning data Cd's(i.e. text files, Microsoft Word files, mp3's, pictures, etc...), then you can use windows explorer in Windows XP by dragging and dropping files onto the drive for the blank CD. For audio Cd's that are going to play on a home stereo or in a car, Windows Media is the best program to use without having to buy extra software. Windows Media Will burn any type music CD. If the CD burner came with a program like Nero, then this will allow you to burn any type of CD. This program is very user friendly and tells you what to do in each step of the CD burning process. Nero also allows you do burn DVDs as well.

If you're only looking to burn audio CDs, then the Windows Media Player is the simplest way of going about that. If you are a more experienced user, or want to burn data CDs, then a program called Nero is usually the best choice. Either of these programs will walk you through the process, so there's no need for prior experience.

Are you using a PC or an Apple?
Will you be burning text files or music...and if music, will you be playing the disc in your car or home stereo?
Apple computers are easy to use.
Once you insert a blank Compact Disc, a window pops up which will prompt you for additional information.
Now, the PC is different and it makes you work for your reward.
Insert the CD,
Open your "My Computer" folder
You should see a window with several icons, including "Local Disk" (which is you computers' drive) and "CD Drive".
Let's assume you'll be transferring files of text (like Microsoft Word documents).
At the top of the window, look for the "Folders" icon and click it on.
You should have a divided window.
Point-click-drag the files and drop them on the "CD Drive".
When finished, click on the "CD Drive", go to the top of the window menu and click on "File", and a second window will open asking you if you want to burn the CD.
Done!
