Ok, my question is why or how do they toast these subs so that the bread has a styrofoam like consistancy afterwards? Anyone else notice that they haven't mastered the art of toasting a sub quite like Quiznos does? Any ideas on this problem?

I mean at Quiznos you get a toasted sub that you can still eat without the bread disintergrating on you...just the outside layer is toasted.

However, at Subway, it is almost like the entire bread gets a dehydrated effect to it. It really seems like biting into styrofoam and then it all falls apart but the meats/toppings are still ok...just the bread gets this way.

I think it has alot to do with the mystery equipment (superfast toaster) that Subway has. But Quiznos has the slower but better conveyor system that you can see the sub getting toasted through the window.

Don't get me wrong I do like COLD Subway subs but I do prefer Quiznos.

the subway toaster oven is a convection toaster oven...it uses hot air as well as heating coils...so it does make the toasted bread much dryer than quiznos...it's capable of not being dried out if the settings are just right and if the staff is taught how to do it...though this rarely happens...i worked for subway for 4 years as a manager and no one ever taught me anything i had to take it upon myself to order video's and paper work to learn most things

I worked at subway for 8 years too long as a manager. The ovens are often not calibrated correctly and the crew often doesn't toast for the correct amount of time. Training on these machines never happened. we were just given the ovens and told here you go, now we have toasted subs. No company representative for the ovens ever came to train anyone. It is basically just trial and error. Bad decision on Subway's part if you ask me

The toaster over toasts the sub using hot air from the top and microwaves from the bottom. While not as effective as what Quizno uses its much faster and less expensive for owners.

If Jersey Mikes is in Joisy...long way to go to get sandwhich from Michigan. But to the point I do like Subway sandwiches and I've never toasted them.

Honestly, I think it's because they have old toasters. I go to Subway sometimes and I have seen them toast their bread in front of me. Sometimes it comes out perfect and somtimes a bit too dry like you said. But either it's because the people who work at Subway put it up too high and don't realize it because they seem to hate their jobs, or it is because the ovens are too old.

I prefer Quizno's toasted to Subway's toasted. It's simple really...if you like cold subs, go to Subway. If you like toasted subs, go for Quizno's. That's about it!

I never really noticed that with the toasted subs. I do not like Quiznos....I just think you spend way more money for less product.

Avoid Subway at all costs! If you want a good sub you must try Jersey Mike's. They cut their meat and cheese fresh unlike Subway who uses pre-sliced, not fresh sliced products.
