you cannot hurt the baby by pushing to go to the bathroom but you can definitely hurt yourself by giving yourself a hemmorhoid or 2. Drink Prune Juice and eat more fiber.
You can take Fibersure up to 2teaspoons 3x a day. (that is what I have been doing) and dr. approved this.
The constipation is from the pre-natal vitamins. Just another lovely symptom of pregnancy.
enjoy and Good luck

1. Never feel bad about calling your OB for every little thing - that's what they are there for!
2. Constipation during pregnancy is normal. You cannot hurt the baby by pushing too hard, but you WILL give yourself hemorrhoids, which will get worse further along in pregnancy.
3. You said you drink water - drink more! This will help most problems encountered in pregnancy. You should be drinking 10-12 cups of water a day (more if you drink any caffeine, because caffeine dehydrates you).
4. I don't think you can take any laxatives, but a cup of hot water with lemon juice added may help move things along. Prune juice is another tried-and-true remedy. You can also try increasing the number of fruits you eat during the day.
Good luck!

You aren't going to hurt the baby. But you are going to get killer hemorrhoids. You need to have even more water if this is still an issue, and perhaps eat something that softens your stool naturally. (This is something different for everyone, so you can experiment.) Sometimes soaking in a warm tub helps when you find it hard to go. Don't hesitate to call the dr. office. You don't always need the dr. The office girls can give you the advice you need on little things like this. But if you don't ask, you won't know, and you will "suffer" needlessly. If you don't have it, get the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting." It's great.

Prenatal vitamins will constipate the Hell out of you! I had the same problem when I was pregnant. You are not likely to hurt the baby, but you are likely to be VERY uncomfortable. Eat more fiber, drink more water. I would occasionally have some minor bleeding after "pushing hard" (so embarassing, but true), but my OB said that was normal and not to worry.

I got constipated with my 1st pregnancy all the time.A week would go by and I was so miserable and it hurt too.Besides drinking at least 8 glasses of water you can try drinking some prune juice-I know it sounds gross but is actually pretty sweet and can get things moving much better.
Also my OB said if those did not work to get some Metimucil and Milk of Magnesia-I used both of those and was not constipated at all for the rest of my pregnancy-and they are perfectly safe for your baby.Good Luck!

i'm so sorry, i'm 11 weeks and have been constipated from the beginning! i don't think you can hurt your baby when you push hard, but i've read that when you push hard, it causes hemorroids which are the pits. you can eat prunes, those are a natural way to do it. or i know there are stool softeners you can take, which i think you should cuz you sound miserable. i would just ask your doctor what kind is best because most cause cramping which is not what you need. i hope that helps. good luck!

I was the same way. I am 16 weeks. I take a colon cleanser from Trader Joe's and have for months, so when I got pregnant I quit everything including caffeine and I became super constipated again. I went and asked my dr and she said I could continue taking the colon cleanser.
Check with your DR. first, but most colon cleansers are all natural ingredients.

constipation is very common during pregnancy. You have to drink obscene amount of water in order to make things easier for you.
If you are hurting badly, phone your doctor as he may be able to give you something.
Otherwise, this is normal. Straining and pushing shouldn't hurt your baby. But be careful with this in your 3rd trimester.

If you're taking a prenatal vitamin, it's the iron that's binding you up. Eat prunes, they even make flavored ones that taste pretty good. Check with your doctor, you may be able to take Colace or a similar stool softener (no stimulant laxatives). If you don't do anything, you'll wind up with hemorrhoids which you do not want!

Your not going to hurt the baby but you can give yourself hemoroids. Dont push so hard...you need to eat more green, leafy vegetables, up your fiber intake. Don't be afraid or feal bad about talking to your Dr., thats what they're there for. If you don't want to disturb him/her ask to speak to a nurse but, don't put it off. This is not only about your comfort, its your health and your babies. Good Luck!
