In 1971, D.B. Cooper (no one knows his name) hijacked and threatened to blow up an airliner, extorted $200,000 from its owner, Northwest Orient, then leaped from the airborne 727 with 21 pounds of $20 bills strapped to his torso. He Jumped over SW Washington. He was never seen again—dead or alive.

I don't think they ever figured out his real name. As for the money, I heard on a TV show awhile ago that they found some of the money under some sand near a river. They made it sound like it had just washed up there, not like somebody had buried it. That show implied that maybe DB didn't live through his jump. Maybe he did though, and just left some money to throw them off. Who knows?

The $5800 that was recovered was in bad shape. It was falling apart and had obviously been exposed to the elements for some time. Most of the primary investigators believe that he died in the jump because the usual behaviors of a windfall crime (neuveau [sp?] riche spending sprees, drugs, hangers-on) were all checked out and discarded. Of course, they had a huge multi-state area to cover. I, too, believe that he died. But this I know: his fame will grow in time until he's in with the Bonnies & Clydes and the James Gangs of the crime world.

Prime suspects include Richard McCoy, Jr., Duane Weber and, less likely, John List. $5,800 of the $200,000 ransom money was found beside the Columbia River northwest of Vancouver, WA. Otherwise we don't know where the money is.
