Been there, done that.

As I remember, I said something like "Oh, s***!!" And then "Hang on!"

Fortunately, it didn't cause any damage to either of our cars, but it didn't change that helpless feeling of being out of control in slow motion.

I think the feeling is helplessness.

Helpless. I would suggest that you not follow so closely though people. You know it's icey so stay farther back and go slowly, then you won't have that helpless feeling.
