I had brittle and pitted nails of and on for a number of years. The final solution is as you suggest a diet solution that works from the inside out.

I decided to try the zone diet several years ago. It worked OK but slow for loosing weight. But after a couple of months my finger nails were in great shape! It seems I was not eating enough protein.

You can try the zone diet or just dd more protein to your diet.

Sally Hansons Miracle growth nail varnish.
Its in the gold bottle and you'll find it in chemists and pharmacies.
Its pricy though but worth it it strenghtens your nails straight away and makes youre nails grow at least 30% in 5 days.
A balenced diet with lots of fruit and veg can help but not that much.

Gelatin tablets. After a few weeks you'll notice the difference. Topically rub them with Vitamin E oil. To keep them healthy use nail polish infrequently/ don't leave on for any major length of time. Natural nails well manicured and simply buffed are very attractive.

Try Iron. Usually people that are Anemic have brittle hair and nails, pale eyelids, pale skin, and the list goes on. Best thing you can do is try to eat healthier. If you like eggs, you can get your protein from them, cook them in a cast iron frying pan for iron, this is one of the best ways to get it. Try taking a multi-vitamin too and extra (but not too much) vitamin C. Vit. C is needed to help absorb iron, as well as something else, but I forget. Plus if you have enough C in your diet you won't have to worry about scurvy...this is another disorder where you can have brittle nails.

Just to let you know...Jello or gelatin will not work. If you watch the Tyra show this subject was touched on. It was mentioned you can eat all the Jello in the world but it's not going to do anything for your nails or hair. You can also find out more about this in Allure: Confessions of a Beauty Editor, book.

Thanks for the thumbs down to whoever gave that to me. Something you should know...I'm well read when it comes to the human body and the nutrients it needs, and my mother is as well. This is something that I learned from her and from medical books, so good luck eating all the Jello in the world...because it won't do crap except for taste good...

Sally Hansen! They have a clear top coat called "hard as nails" it works wonders for me... I keep my nails short, but even then, they still break off if I dont use the Sally Hansen stuff...

Eating Jello is a terrific help for brittle nails, and it tastes good, too.
