2 multiplied by 2 is the application of a mathematical function that takes any number (real or imaginary) and doubles it.

In other words, f(x) = 2x.

In your case, you have chosen x = 2, so f(2) = 2(2) which equals 4.

However, that is only the answer in base 5 or higher.

In base 4, the answer would be 10.

In base 3, the answer would be 11.

In base 2, this operation is impossible since the only numbers in base 2 are 0 and 1.

With integers from the real numbers? 4
With the smallest integer field that contains 2? 1
(The field is called Z3 and consists of the set {0, 1, 2} along with two operations: addition and multiplication; 0 cannot have a multiplicative inverse and 1 is always its own multiplicative inverse, therefore 2 must be its own multiplicative inverse, since it must have one that is neither 0 nor 1 (Z3 is a field) and there are no other numbers left; (multiplying a number by its multiplicative inverse always gives 1).

In the multiplicative group Z2 ({0, 1}, with normal multiplication), 2 is congruent to zero therefore 2 multiplied by 2 is zero.

In any other space, we'd have to know how you define the operation that you call "multiplication" (and what the space is, of course)

Let us use items to better illustrate the question.

There are 2 candies and 2 chocolates. Now, what will you have?

Answer: Zero... and more!

How?? Why??

The child ate the candies and chocolates (equals "zero"), gained cavities and a stomach ache ("and more").

Cheers!
