What is the best way in this situation to approach businesses and organizations for donations to a familiy...?

A WONDERFUL woman dies a few days ago completely unexpectedly. She left behind an overwrought husband and 6 great but devestated children. They could use some financial help but I don't know how to go about getting donations (either for a raffle or directly to the family) from businesses. Can anyone give me insight on how to begin?

I would say the best thing to do is to bring one of the kids with you or bring a picture of the family with you when you approach the decision maker of the businesses or organizations that you plan to get donations from. If you don't want to approach the businesses or organizations in person, you can send them direct mail.
