With a Mulberry you can cut it back all the way. Take off all smaller branches. When properly pruned they look like a trunk with about a dozen very large nubs. You would think by looking at it that it would never grow back, but it does.

It's almost impossible to kill a mulberry tree, they are basically weeds. Cut it back into the shape you want, but you'll have to keep it trimmed or it will get out of hand again.

Please do NOT top your tree, as other posters have suggested. Topping is the worst thing that can be done to a tree and only an ignorant person who doesn't know anything about trees will suggest doing it. Here is information about why topping is bad: http://www.treesaregood.com/treecare/topping.aspx

Here is some information about how to properly prune your tree including the maximum amount that should be removed per year: http://www.treesaregood.com/treecare/pruning_mature.aspx

you can cut it back to the trunk, and probably won't kill it!. The reason now is the time is because insects can't invade the fresh cuts. By spring they will have healed. Cut it as far back as needed to protect the roof, and try to balance the tree for looks. You could fertilize it afterward, to help it recover.

Don't be sentimental. If the tree is poorly placed, it will always be a problem, and could be dangerous.
