The same reason more people go to movies to see highly entertaining movies, horror movies, comedies, westerns, and sci-fi films rather than go to see documentaries. People pay more if they feel entertained than if they feel inferior in the knowledge category. More income...bigger prizes.

If the game is simpler it takes up less of the budget to put together so there is more money for the prizes and more people watch to . Higher ratings bring in even more money.
Let's just face it. There are way more idiots out the than intellectual folk and they are all glued to there stupid t.vs. The TV shows these stupid people watch are geared to make them more stupid and so goes the never-ending cycle.

Because the majority of people who watch the fun or less intellectual shows, are to stupid to play along with the intellecual ones. So therefore the fun ones get better ratings, resulting in more money.

More stupid people are inclined to watch the un-intellectual shows...and since there are more stupid people watching tv they get higher ratings, therefor able to give higher payouts.
