clean then defrag, doing it the other way round would be pointless because when you 'clean' (delete files) it is re-fragmenting the drive again which counteracts the defragging you did beforehand.
it is the creation or removal of files/data that causes the hard drive to become fragmented in the first place, so you should defrag AFTER you do a 'spring clean' of your files.

Clean out any programs you don't use or want. Defrag the computer and then do a system check, located in the same place where defrag is. Also remove a panel from the tower, disconnect take outside and blow it out with a can of air. Make sure you get the power supply fan and the cpu fan and any other fans you have inside.

DC made a point there, i have no idea where he got that point but its wrong please keep defraging every 4/6 months, its all the small things added together that slow your computer down, the seek time for information is slower on a system that is badly fragmented even if its saving you milliseconds its still all the small things, oh and clean and defrag would be the one.

Defrag's the last stage, once you've got rid of all the junk etc. It tidies the drive up.
T'other way around, cleaning will leave fragments on your beautifully defragged drive

You should clean and then defragment.
Cleaning the computer will leave fragments therefore if you defragment after you clean these fragments will not exist.
Hope this helps.

Defrag is one of the biggest IT myths existing if you ask me. I've never known it make a sod's worth of difference to how quickly a PC runs. Yeah, maybe in 1990 when we were all running 486's. These days, if you want to improve the speed of your PC, check that you aren't using all of your memory and if it is looking full, get some more - else buy a better motherboard and chip. If you are using onboard graphics, buy a graphics card. That will free up resources on your motherboard.
