Sometimes oil leaks burn up on the hot engine manifold and may smell somewhat like that if it's not an electrical problem. But an electrical problem that bad should have blown a fuse. A leaking heater core should have a sort of sweet antifreeze type smell, but you'd also be getting an oily film forming on the inside of your windshield. YOu know this time of year alot of people do burn their leaves and garbage and stuff. Im not trying to be a smartass but you could be smelling that. I have had periods like that to I smell burning rubber or fire with no reasonable explanation though. Take care I hope you find out what it is. I would love to know.

It depends on what kind of car you own. There are a few out there with recalls for your exact problem. Usually it's on some of the newer cars. The Air mixture door, fan motor, and some other electrical equipment short out and melt wires causing your smell. Don't know for sure that's your problem, but I would definately check service recalls to make sure!

If it's brand new, that may be perfectly normal for the first few miles.
